thanks
Well, although I can't do it on my system(do to a phone
line issue), I can explain it to you, at least the basics.
First, since this is an XP group, I'll assume you're XP.
Next, you'll need a couple of basic things:
1). The recipient's fax number.
2). The document you want to fax.
I also assume that your initial attempts will be mostly for
experimentation, so the fax document could just be the
cover page.
Also, since you mention nothing about other equipment,
you'll be limited to a fax document/cover page that is
already resident in your system.
Now, with that said, the easiest, most straightforward
way to fax is to open the document. There are many
different ways to fax, but this is the most basic.
After opening the document, open the (file) pulldown tab
at the top, and choose the (print) selection.
You'll receive a print dialog box with several options, but
the only change to make is the destination of the print
service. In the print destination list, you will/may have a
number of destinations listed. Since you're on a laptop,
this list may be somewhat abbreviated from a desktop
configuration, depending on your last initialization. But,
you should have a selection that simply says - "Fax".
If that selection is missing, you should stop here and det-
ermine the status of the fax service on your system.
But, if the fax selection is available, make that selection,
and end with (OK).
This is exactly like printing to a real device, except the
document will be routed to the fax service. In turn, this
will launch the fax service wizard that will prompt you
through the steps necessary to complete the fax. Click
(Next).
Another thing I probably should have mentioned during
the preparation, is you might want to turn on your system
speaker and roll up the volume, so you can hear what's
happening. Also, via control panel/phone and modems,
you should ensure that your modem echoes sequences
until the connection is achieved.
Back to the fax wizard, complete the requested informa-
tion requested. Regarding the fax number, I would sugg-
est using a local number for your initial attempts, and
entering that number entirely in the rightmost number
box, and deselecting any specification for the "use dial-
ing rules" option.
The number would be entered as xxx-555-1212, where
the xxx is your area code, and the remaining numbers
comprise the rest of the fax number. Click (Next).
Now, you're asked for cover page information. This is all
pretty self explanatory, so you can determine what will be
necessary here. Click (Next).
Next, you asked about scheduling the fax. Again, this is
all self explanatory. Click (Next).
This is the last step in preparing the fax for transmission.
You're given a chance to change/amend your previous
entries, or to review the fax document before being sent.
Click (Finish).
The fax monitor window will now appear as the fax proc-
cess continues. As mentioned earlier, you should be hear-
ing the on-hook sequences taking place via your phone
connection. Selecting the (More...) label in the fax mon-
itor window will show you a very brief log of the status
of the fax process.
If the fax completes successfully, you can go to Start/All
Progams/Accessories/Communications/Fax/Fax Console to review the final fax
status.(This location will depend on
your Start menu structure).
If, on the other hand, a problem was encountered, that
will require further research, which can probably be bet-
ter identified at:
"microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax"
Thanks,
