Send text messages from my PC via my phone?

D

deKay

I have a Nokia N-Gage, but, me being somewhat behind the times when it comes
to mobile phones, I just can't get used to sending text messages with it.

Is there a program for Windows XP that will let me type the message on my
computer, but send it via my phone? The N-Gage is a Symbian S60 (basically)
and has Bluetooth, if you need that information.

Thanks.

Hmmm.... there are no progs that I know of that will do that, but I may be
wrong.

Can I ask - why do you not get along with texting on your mobile? Have you
got the predictive texting on? That thing always confuses the s**t out of me
on *any* mobile! Luckily, I know how to turn the damn thing off!

On or off makes no difference. It takes (no lie) a good ten minutes to type a
text message. I can barely operate the other functions of the phone either.
Can't stand mobiles :)

If you've got Bluetooth capabilities, why not just use the Nokia PC Suite
(http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,,72014,00.html - Win XP and 2000)

This should allow you to type messages on the computer and send them via the
phone via Bluetooth.

Because the Nokia PC Suite doesn't work with the N-Gage - you need a special
N-Gage version of it, that doesn't have that functionality.

If you're on a GSM network you can use Microsoft SMS Sender which can
be downloaded from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...97-7f69-4891-8929-37b9041924a2&DisplayLang=en

Watch for text wrap in that long URL, or simply Google for "Microsoft
SMS Sender" and choose the top result.

Thanks for that, but it can't see my phone :/

And who pays how ?

Just guessing but ...I assume you have to enter the number of your
own mobile phone to use, which then generates an SMS charge to it
through some sort of link with your network provider.

And who pays how ?

Here are the steps:

1. Connect your PC to your phone somehow (Bluetooth/IR/old-fashioned
cable)
2. Type the message in the SMS Sender software, including the
destination number
2. Send from the PC software

The above simply makes your PC act as a gateway for composing and
relaying the message. There is absolutely no difference in how the
message is delivered, viz. as a regular SMS from a physical phone, and
you're charged whatever the SMS would cost if you'd typed it and sent
it directly using your phone.

Entering your own phone number doesn't come into the picture at all
since your phone is already connected to your PC.

You mentioned you had Bluetooth, so I assumed (always bad to assume I
know!) that you could connect it to your computer using Bluetooth.
Unless you have one of the new laptops with inbuilt Bluetooth, you will
likely need a Bluetooth adapter (receiver) on your computer for making
the connection.

The alternative that I personally use is my phone's IR port which
communicates perfectly with my laptop's IR port.

In the absence of one of these types of wireless connections, your best
bet is to procure an inexpensive cable that plugs into your phone at
one end, and into a USB slot at the computer end.

I do indeed. The N-Gage PC Suite can see my phone just fine, and I can even
dial-up the Internet through the phone, over Bluetooth. The MS SMS program
just complains "Failed to connect to the selected device". Delving into this

The N-Gage is a bit "special" in terms of connections. It can only
communicate with a PC via Bluetooth, has no IR, and a USB cable will only let
you access the MMS card inside the phone.

Actually I used SMS Sender over a year ago, so didn't remember the
exact steps. But something in that forum post you pointed to jogged my
memory. You may need to set up the modem software for your phone to be
recognized as a "modem" for Windows.

Check out the following link from where you can download the software
for N-Gage:

http://www.n-gage.com/en-R1/support/Software/modemsoftware.htm

Hope this is the missing piece for your N-Gage to be recognized by SMS
Sender. But then again, it may already be installed, since you mention
you can dial the Internet using Bluetooth already. Anyway, I wish you
luck!

And managed it. Had to search for modems in the Windows control panel, which
prompted one to be installed. Just sent a message.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Right. So the MS s/w allows an easier way of typing text messages.
