under the send/receive settings for my hotmail account i have the option to
check the box to "make this folder available offline". what exactly does this
mean? also, under the send/receive groups tab, under the "when outlook is
offline" heading i have the option to schedule an auto s/r. does this mean
when i dont have outlook open it will auto check my mail? thx for any help

Without testing, I would take that to mean that Outlook will store copies of
your Hotmail folders on your local machine (it does this anyway) and allow
you to access those folders while you have File>Work Offline checked (I
don't now if if Hotmail folders are normally available while offline, but I
suspect not).

Outlook CANNOT check mail while offline nor can it check mail if it's not
running. I haven't used that particular setting, but reading the
documentation indicates to me that what that setting does is tell Outlook
periodically to go online, synchronize the folders, and then go offline
again without changing the state of "Work Offline".
