selective start up boot

is there, as there used to be, a way to boot up Windows XP Home one step at
a time, via the safe mode and yes/no process for each executable? I am
trying to isolate a very clever virus file which Norton catches and deletes
but it always comes back to play another day.

Try a Knoppix Live CD. You can run a Virus Program F-Prot from the CD and
bypass Windows. You can get it here
