Excel Selecting non-adjacent cells in Excel 2007

I recently encountered a problem with Excel 2007 (using XP). I am unable to select non-adjacent cells using the CTRL button option - actually, the problem seems to be that I am unable to SEE the selected cells (highlighting). For example, I am able to select non-adjacent cells by entering ranges in the name box, and can create a chart from same, but it is annoying doing it this way (without fedback indicating the selected cells). Thanks for any suggestions.
