Selecting multiple objects

For some reason I'm unable to select multiple objects in FrontPage 2003. I
went to a different program to see if it was perhaps my keyboard but I was
able to in Illustrator by using the shift key. Then I realized it would let
me do it with like items (say two layers) but not different objects. Is there
a way to select layers and autoshapes etc?
