seemingly no connection between screen en pc

hey

i have a problem. after quite a time not using my computer (i didn't
have a screen), i bought a screen, which i tested on another system.
the screen worked perfectly. still, after plugging it in into my vga,
the computer starts up, i hear noise, but the monitor doesn't seem to
have connection with the pc. so i gave my vga to check at local
computer store, and they said it workes ok.
so my question is, what can be the problem?

Your new screen might not support the resolution and/or refresh rate you
have selected. When starting your computer push f8 and select either safe
mode or vga mode.
