Seeking suggestions for apartment networking

I am running Win98SE on a P3 box (with an Asantefast ethernet card). I
recently moved into a new apartment and my roommate does not want an
Internet connection. I do.

My landlord lives upstairs and he's running his family's computers on
an ethernet connection and router that is connected to a broadband
cable modem in the basement.

He's agreed to allow me to connect to his cable modem setup, but I'd
rather not connect my ethernet cable to his router in his apartment.
So, I've thought about upgrading my wired ethernet card to a wireless
card, put a wireless router or gateway in the basement and connect that
to the broadband modem's USB port (the modem is only using a cable and
ethernet port currently).

Still with me? Or do I nix the cable... and go with a DSL connection
instead which would require ordering phone service for the existing but
not used telephone line?

Very confused. Looking for the least expensive option with the least
amount of hassle. Thanks!

In most modems you cannot use Eth and USB simultaniously.
