Seeking help with applications freezing when trying to 'save as' or 'insert file'

Tomma

I would appreciate any help on the following problem that I think is related
to Windows XP (I have added my system spec at the end of the message):

My MS Office XP applications and some other applications freeze (hang up),
after clicking the 'Save in:' drop down box when in the 'Save As' window (eg
Notepad, Word or Excel) or the 'Look in:' drop down box when in the 'Insert
File' window (eg Outlook). The cursor turns to an egg timer and then the app
freezes. I can still access other applications on my PC.

The only way to exit the applications is by using task manager to 'end task'
and this takes many tries.

After experiencing the problem, if I click in the 'My Computer' window, it
also freezes.

The following type of message is shown in the MS problem report (in the case
of Excel freezing):

"szAppName : EXCEL.EXE szAppVer : 10.0.2614.0 szModName : hungapp
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000"

Note: The CPU runs at 100% when the applications freeze.

I have tried (with no success):

1. Repairing MS Office
2. Running Norton Antivirus with latest updates to Jan 21(no viruses found)
3. Running Ad-aware 6.0 (removed one malware and a number of tracking
cookies)
4. Doing a system restore to the last time that I can recall that the
problem did not occur
5. I have not re-installed MS Office because it appears to happen with other
'non-MS' applications and I think it may be XP related.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - Thanks !

Hopefully by replying to your query, it will bring more attention to it. I was searching today for answers to this very problem. I might add that the issue not only occurs with MS Office files, but others as well. I did not see this behavior until recently, say for the pas 4 weeks or so. Prior to this XP was behaving admirably and I had no complaints. I don't know what changed in that period, either. But now it's so bad that the only prevention of the problem is to reboot the PC ever 45 minutes to an hour!

Does anyone know what causes this and how to solve it? I've also been running Adaware and Norton Antivirus faithfully every 2 days, also emptying IE cahe and temp files. Nothing strange has surfaced as a result of the scans.
