Seek messagebox text scraper

Is there a free utility which lets me copy the text in a messagebox
on XP?

I have tried using 'CopyMsgBox' from
http://www.our-class.net/mmchristen and I have tried the Scraper
utility which PC Mag wrote.

The trouble is that neither of these seems to work in more than a
limited number of situations.

Try CopyText from http://www10.pair.com/vsap/
Not sure if it works on XP, it does work on 98SE. I also don't know if it
has the same limitations as the programs you mentioned above.
I would recommend to follow the instructions in the readme.txt about making
a shortcut and assigning a key-combo.

Did you try a simple Ctrl+C?
It works on XP message boxes.

The following is the result of a Ctrl+C on a message box I get every time I
try to delete a folder (which must be corrupted and I'm not able to delete)

Just press Ctrl + C if it's a message box (for Win2000/ME/XP). Doesn't work for dialog boxes. A dialog box can look exactly like a message box.
