Seeing a scanner over a home network

I recently set up a very small home network with my desktop PC (a Gateway Select 900 with numerous upgrades), which has the printer and scanner attached to it, and a laptop (specifically, a Dell Inspiron 1150) with a DLink wireless router. The network works flawlessly: Both computers can access the internet, they can share files between them, and both can print off of the printer (and HP DeskJet 560C). (Yeah, I know the printer is ancient, but it works well enough for us for now.) I can even access my Zip 100 drive, which is attached to my desktop PC from the laptop over the network.

The problem I'm having is getting my laptop to "see" the Epson Perfection 2400 Photo scanner which is attached to the desktop. Does anybody have any ideas? Can it even be done?

Thanks!

Most scanners are not network-shareable. If yours was it would come with
the drivers/software to allow it to be seen on the network.

I'm still not 100% sure what the big buzz is about a network scanner anyway.
You've still got to walk the documents over to it.

If all anyone wants to do is save them elsewhere why not establish a shared
folder on the network, scan the documents to it, then return to their
workstation and move the documents from the shared folder to their local
folder?

That's always been my argument, too.

The EPSON Perfection 2400 is not a networkable scanner. It is a
hardware resource that is installed in your computer not an icon
attached to your desktop. It is not possible to share this resource
across a network.
You can purchase scanners that can be shared. These require
hardware/firmware and software to be designed specifically for the
task.
Hardware: Connections to the network.
Firmware: Ability to recognise Network Interface when connected via
standard ports.
Software: Host software that allows the device to be shared and a
driver that allows you to connect to the host software across a
network (has IP addressing options).
Again this is not possible with the P2400.
