See/remove phantom messages?

Ever since I switched from Outlook 2003 to 2007 (SP1), whenever I do a
send/receive:

If there's nothing visible in my outbox, it doesn't seem to try to send any
messages.
But if there there's a message there, the status indicator says "sending
message 5 of 5" instead of "1 of 1".

I thought this might be a stuck read receipt problem, but I followed the
instructions at http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/deletereadreceipt.htm and
there was nothing there either.

Any idea what's going on and how I can clear it up?
