Security warning

Today I was infected with Spyware Quake. I have removed most of it but I am
left with a security alert that pops up from time to time saying something
like 'The current Web page is trying to open an internet site....etc.

Can anyone tell me if this is a genuine IE warning, and how to stop it
and/or remove the remaining bit of Spyware Quake that may be the cause.

I get this warning even when i do not have a browser window open.

Hi Peter,

The security warning that you describe, I think is from Norton Internet
Security. If you don't have it installed then there is also a security
option (Internet Options, Security tab) to 'Display notification when
navigating across domains', though this should not be displaying when IE is
not even running.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your reply. In fact I do not have any Norton components installed.

I downloaded and ran Windows Defender (beta 2) which detected 'Zolob' but
was unable to remove it. I then went to security live centre and did a full
system scan - same result - detected it but not able to remove it.

Following the advice in a thread elsewhere I ran a sequence of smitrem,
Ewido and cccleaner in safe mode. That worked.

I wasted a whole day on this - why do people do it? and perhaps we can look
forward to an OS which does not allow it.

Regards
Pete
