What do you mean "confirmation"? The link works fine. To clarify: if you
are *not* having problems, don't apply the fix. I have some HP printers
and a scanner here and none of my Windows machines have experienced any
problems with the Update. However, I don't have the HP Share-to-Web
software either.

Lots of people have experienced problems with Update KB908531. Microsoft
has written a Knowledge Base article about it which includes the manual
fix:

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install
security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

However, the manual fix may be daunting for some people. MVP Kelly
Theriot has come through as the hero she is and has written an
automated script to do the fix.

Is that the confirmation you were looking for?

Confirmed-- Kelly's script fixes the problem.

It is much safer to trust a script from Kelly or Doug to fix a problem than
to have a novice user mucking about in the registry.

A confirmation? Are you asking whether it's safe to use Kelly's scripts?.

Absolutely! There is nobody whose scripts are safer than Kelly's.

To Malke, Ken and Larry
Confirm the link means confirm the link. I go to Kellys Korner myself and
trust it implicitly.
I have not yet done the update/download - waiting to see what happens.
As soon as I saw this link, I went to it and unless I have missed something,
there is nothing on line 383 'right hand side' - that line is empty!
Yes, and I went to the knowledge base and yes I found it daunting and that's
why I waited to see how things developed.
I didn't 'recognise' anything applicable to 908531, so I asked for her
confirmation. Not properly asked, admittedly.
It didn't help with some 'dipstick' mentioning a 'file being empty'
Sorry to cause all this confusion.

It's strange, but when I use firefox the file is empty. But if I use
IE, then the file is complete.

Is this the same fix that Ottmar Freudenberger has been offering in the
Windows Update newsgroup.

No
Kelly's script makes the changes suggested by MS, removes the hp entry, then
terminates the Verclsid process.

Thank you Anon.
And I now see that there is an entry in the Kellys Korner link given
previously. I still do not know why I got this as a needed update from MS.
That's why I didn't download - glad I didn't with the problem posts.
But if I have to then that's to you and KK I have all ready and waiting.

Thanks Larry, it's just that I'm at WU before getting to XPGeneral and
Freudis fix has been posted quite a lot, so coming here and seeing that
Kelly had put one out made me wonder.

I don't need either as I've had no problems since the updates, only have
a HPLaserjet 1500L attached here, my multifunction machine is an Epson and
only gets plugged in when needed.

Me too, Joan, since the REG file contained in the "well known" ZIP file
does exactly the same - but not terminate verclsid (which isn't neccessary
IMHO).

Bye,
Freudi

Hi Freudi,

One of the early alerts from MS recommended stopping the verclsid service or
rebooting after applying the registry fix.
