Security update - encrypted files access problem

J

John G

I installed the latest security patches for Windows XP
Professional on my Dell C840 laptop.

After the installation I couldn't login with the user
that installed the security patches. I had to login with
my second admin account and reset the password.

After logging in I couldn't access my encrypted files
(access denied). Some searching on Microsoft sites gave
me the idea to check the certificates. When checking them
I saw that I had two personal certificates for
encrypting. I exported and deleted the "the newly
created" certificate and restarted my computer but that
didn't help. I still had two. I exported and deleted my
original certificate and tried to import it. None of that
helped.

What can I do to get access to my ecrypted files? I still
have the original certificate. If the certificate is
lost, is there another way to gain access to the files?

Hi John. If you reset the password for an account using EFS, you will lose the
ability to access the encrypted files - you were warned of that when you did it. That
is a security feature to keep your data safe. Try to change your password for that
account back to what it was and try again with the private key residing in your mmc
personal user store. --- Steve
