Security Settings for XP

Q

QsWife

I get the following msg "Current security settings
prohibit runnin active x controls on this page. As a
result, the page may not display correctly."
I get this when I attempt to download updates from the
microsoft website.

My security settings all have Active X Controls enabled
and a medium security setting. What else can I do.

Try re-registering the following .dll files
Softpub.dll
Wintrust.dll
Initpki.dll
Urlmon.dll

1. Click Start >Run and type
regsvr32 Softpub.dll
Click okay to register it
You should get a dialog box telling you that it was successful.
2. Repeat the process for the other .dll files.
3. Restart your computer and try the update site again.

Hello again, Kaylene.

I replied to a similar ActiveX post of your yesterday when I saw this
problem the first time. Now today, I saw it again on two other computers - I
mean exactly the same symtoms. Windows Update not working, MSN Explorer not
working, MSN Messenger not working, but few, if any other signs of anything
wrong.

Can you enlighten me on what is going on? All three machines I have had
this experience with have been on a cable Internet connection, behind a HW
router, and running NAV 2004.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Thought - NAV can block activex - you'll need to check the NAV settings.

Sorry I think I'm confusing NAV with NIS. Do you have a Firewall installed,
perhaps check the settings there.

Other possibilities:
The below links assist you in checking your system for parasites:-

Please note that some malware may kill the internet connection when it is
removed, the program on the link below will enable you to regain the internet
connection.

No, NAV and the Zone Alarm firewall (on one PC only) were fine. They had
been working for more than a year together with the OS and no problems.

Not sure if you understood (maybe I didn't say), but your tip to re-register
the .dll's did the trick instantly. I would really like to find out what
happened. Spyware/Malware are not possibilities, especially on my own PC's -
I keep things clean - I do this type of work for a living. With that said,
Adaware wasn't common on all three PC's, nor was Zone Alarm, although NAV was.

But to repeat, at the time of my post, I was back up and running.

Also note: My IE browser showed NO signs of trouble, it would go anywhere
it was pointed, except for accessing WU site. It was Windows Update, MSN
Explorer, and MSN Messenger only that couldn't connect, and one three
seperate machines - two in one residence and one, mine, on my SOHO network.

Keylene, I have quoted you several times with your re-registering
instructions in reply to several other people's posts along the same lines.

Thank you for the replies and if you decide what happened, be sure to let me
know!

Thanks again,

I don't know what happens really, sometimes the dll files need to be registered.
I just put it down to a glitch in the system. I'm not a programmer. It it works
great - the trick is to know which dlls need to be re-registered. So I can't
answer your question why the problem occurs in the first place. Main thing is it
worked for you.
