Security setting problem

Hi

I hope someone can help with this one - first time posting here.

I recently installed Windows XP and everything was working fine. But now I
find that I can't access my on-line banks, sign in to my Amazon account
etc - anything that requires security. I just get the 'The page cannot be
displayed' page. I am sure I haven't changed any settings accidentally, and
have checked inside the Internet Options menu, and it all looks ok (to me).
The Security tab is set to 'medium' and the 'Advanced' tab, security looks
ok with the SSL and TLS checked. There are no system restore points to fall
back on either :-(

Another little niggle is that when I come to change a Norton Firewall
setting, it is telling me that I don't have permission to make changes - but
I am the Administrator on this computer!

Hi Dave,

Can't help you with Norton's, but for the first problem, close all instances
of Internet Explorer, click start/run and enter "regsvr32 softpub.dll" and
click ok. When it's finished (successful), retry the secure sites.

Wow - I wasn't expecting a reply that quickly from the NG - thank you!

I have done as you advised. I had the 'successful' message, but still can't
access the secure pages. Is there anything else I could try, please - or
should I just give up and try re-installing my browser?

Hi Dave,

Reinstalling it won't hurt, and it may help. Set folder options/view in the
control panel to see hidden and system folders. Then locate the ie.inf file
under C:\Windows\Inf, right-click it and choose "install" to begin.
