Security Patch locks up computer

I run Win XP Home and have auto-update set to download and
notify when critical updates from MS are available. Last
night I was notified of the update based on KB824146. As
usual, I read the details of the vulnerability and
installed the patch. After rebooting several times, my
computer CPU jumps to 100% and just sits there. Only the
mouse pointer will move. Does anyone have any suggestions?
