book, I don't think even "geek squad" is that bad.

But a NAT Router or a NAT Router with a full FireWall implementation is better than using
a FireWall application in many respects.

I recently upgraded from a plain NAT Router to a NAT Router with a full FireWall
implementation and I ham very happy with it ability to "rules".

I think for a NAT router to be effective protection from inbound
threats the pc needs to be assigned to a non-obvious local address. I
would still see port scans when I had my pc at 192.168.1.64.

A software firewall will give you the opportunity to detect
unauthorized outbound traffic which a hardware firewall will allow to
pass. The Microsoft Firewall does not provide this function.
