Hi there,

Today I wanted to download (a small) removal SW
from its website www.lop.com/new_uninstall.exe .
But as soon as this page opens, the following
"Security Alert" pops up on my screen:
"Your current security settings do not allow this
file to be downloaded."

Of course, I changed already (temporarily only!)
under Internet Options > Security > Custom Level
ALL settings to "ENABLE"...but to no avail!

So any tips would be now highly appreciated;
thank you very much in advance.

Philippe B.

Hi Noel Paton,

Hmm, I'm afraid you did not fully understand
my problem: This indicated software IS actually
THE REMOVAL TOOL for THIS malware;
hence I would like to get...RID of "it", now (!).

So what I'm asking this NG, is to kindly guide me
of how to ADJUST now my IE6-SETTINGS, so
that I'm able to download this removal software...

(Therefore, my current query has to be taken as a
"global question"; ie. my stated software is NOT
relevant at all; okay!).

Philippe B.

PS:
-- Security Level is (already) set at Medium and I even
tried at "Low" (!).
-- But OTHER software-downloads (over different URL)
are possible without any problems; though.
-- www.lop.com/new_uninstall.exe does...work via...
FIREFOX; but this is not what I want (he, he!!).

Okay, thanks Noel Paton and I'll certainly follow your advice...
But I STILL would like to find out of HOW to allow a possible
such download without getting this annoying "Security Alert" (!);
even if I do not push thru at the end to actually downloading it.

Indeed, I'm SURE that "sooner or later" I'll encounter the SAME
problem with ANOTHER, this time perhaps then "legal" software...

You see, I know that it works with IE6 (ie. just like with Firefox!!),
since my son doesn't get this "blockade" with his own PC's IE6...

"A few hours later"...here one more detail:
So far, this error seems to appear really
ONLY on THIS specific URL "of mine";
ie. www.lop.com/new_uninstall.exe (!).
So could pls someone kindly go to this site too??
Mind you, there's of course NO need to actually
download this program...but I just would like to
know if other people are also being confronted
with this annoying "Security Alert"...okay, pls??
Philippe B.

Yessssssss Noel, I FULLY agree with you...really!

But nevertheless, it's NOT NORMAL AT ALL that I
CANNOT gain at least...access to this specific site; okay!

As I said before: On my son's PC (and via Firefox) it works!!
And in YOUR case, I'm quite SURE that YOU can...view this site;
right? (Reaching it, does not mean you have to click "download"!).

So QUITE OBVIOUSLY, something is wrongly set on MY IE6...

He, he...you could be indeed damn right with you assumption!

Yep: I can gain access at once to the homepage of LOP.
But when click there at the bottom "Help", then at the line
"How can I remove the accessories toolbar?" and at its active
link "available here" (in order to reach "this" download page),
....again this Security Alert will pop up and blank me out (!).

I can't go to it either but I checked my restricted site list and it's
there. I assume either Spybot Search and Destroy's immunize feature or
Spyware Blaster put it there.

Dear Ricky,

Wow, thanks A LOT for your MOST VALID tip!!!!!!!!!!!
Indeed: I just checked now myself under "Restricted sites"...
and guess what; he, he!! So after deleting it, I was AT LAST
able to gain access to this download site (that's real cool!!).
But I REALLY have to admit to myself now: How "DUMB"
I was...NOT to have checked "there" in the first place; yaks!!

And here now a message for Noel Paton:
You see, I had been ALREADY infected with this ad-toolbar
from LOP; but after now running this removal soft, it's GONE!!
So after all, "this" download site of LOP can't be as bad as...
YOU might think; indeed: In my case it did...REMOVE AT
ONCE this unwanted toolbar from my IE6 -- okay (!).
But otherwise, could you kindly give me now the direct URL
of an ALTERNATIVE download site where I could ALSO
obtain such removal tool...this "just in case" I might encounter
again "one day" this same incident of having suddenly this
most annoying toolbar showing up on my IE6?? Thanks!!
(Yes I know: You did give me a link before, but I just couldn't
locate there this alternative removal software for LOP; sorry!).

So bye for now, thanking BOTH of you for having given me
your valuable time which I really did appreciate; okay!!

With very best regards from Switzerland,
Philippe Borel

PS:
Actually, Noel Paton must have had already "this" in mind (about
"restricted sites") when he asked me before if I was in a position
to reach the webpage www.lop.com! But despite of having had
this URL listed under my "restricted sites", I was able to do so!
So I assume that "restricted" means what it means: You can still
reach such URL, but NOT try to download anything on it; right?
Philippe Borel

In part - it means that the page is extremely limited in what it can do, and
all external functionality is effectively stripped out before being rendered
on-screen.

Since there is in fact no page there at all - it's purely a download link -
the Restricted setting disallows anything.

Well, that's indeed "a very good question", Noel!
I'll therefore run now Ad-Aware and Spybot which
should then be able to detect any "remains" of LOP
....correct!?!?
Philippe Borel

Okay; so "everything" seems to be now "quite clear" to me.
Hence, thank you for this additional info of yours; Noel.
Philippe

Okay; thanks Noel!!
And "by the way: I'm quite impressed about your
background as narrated in the Microsoft MVP Profile...
