Securing Computers

Trevor

In my home workgroup network I am running one XP MCE and one XP Pro PC.
These PC have sharing configured on them. I recently had a room mate move in
and they have a MAC. I have enabled wireless access for them to connect to
the internet.

How can I ensure that MAC computer has NO access to any shares on my windows
network.

Any Suggestions

You're in luck - you have Pro and MCE, which is a superset of Pro. Go to
Control Panel>Folder Options>View tab and uncheck the option to use "Simple
File Sharing". Now on both of your machines, create matching user accounts
and passwords if you haven't already (ex. Trevor for the account name).
Make it a strong password. Also assign a strong password to the built-in
Administrator account on both machines. Now go to your shares and
right-click on each one and under "Security", only allow Trevor and
Administrator access to those shares. Any other user from any other machine
will get "access denied" if they try to access those shares.

In addition to setting a strong password I would advise adjusting the scope
of the File and Printer Sharing exception on the firewalls so as to only
allow the IP range used by the Windows PCs. Preferably allocate a static IP
to each Windows PC, and ensure that the Macs are outside this scope, but in
the same subnet.

Some routers allow you to segregate WiFi and wired Ethernet traffic from
each other, and this may be an even better option if it is available.
