secure remote control freeware?

I watched a bud run GoToMyPC recently, connecting over the internet,
popping up the screen of a remote computer that he manipulated from his
PC via broadband connection with his mouse and keyboard. Slick, a but
costly subscription. I've been reading up on open source equivalents,
but some have been converted to pay models and some seem to have
security issues. I'm not that sophisticated about setups, so I'm hoping
to find a program that I can leave running on my home machine and log
onto from my laptop on the road via broadband internet, that's
reasonably secure but doesn't require me to do something like VPN or SSH
Shell (which I've read about but don't fully understand). Is there
anything? BTW, both home PC and laptop run Windows 2000 Pro.

VNC?

Not sure how secure that is, but it does the trick of remotely
controlling a machine. And it is not platform dependant,

Check out UltraVNC at:
http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net

I prefer this to the free version of RealVNC because of the encryption
plugin and the file transfer capability.

I recommend UltraVNC.
