I installed a new hard drive, and Windows XP (Home), and
configured the old hard drive as a slave. Jumpers are
correct, cables are correct. Device Manager sees the
second drive, but labels it "uninitialized," so the data
is irretrievable. The new drive is a Seagatem the old is
a Western Digital. Is there any way to "initialize" the
slave drive without reformtting it and, thus, losing the
data?

I don't know if this will help you. I just did the same
thing but I pulled the jumper off. Now I have no problem.
I also whent into the BIOS and turned it on. You may want
to try that before pulling the jumper. Hope this helps you.

Disconnect the slave (Old winxp drive), boot up
All OK?
Shutdown, reconnect slave and boot up
