I have a Western Digital 80GB 7200 EIDE HD. It doesn't show up in Disk
Manager. The BIOS recognizings and loads it, but XP will not recognize the
drive. I've changed IDE cables, unslaved it, and put it in the secondary IDE
slot, but nothing. Which can you suggest I do next? I want to maintain the
info on the drive, but I don't know what to do? HELP!

Since the drive is seen in the BIOS, try booting with Knoppix to get the
data off the drive that way. Then format the drive and use for storage,
whatever. I'd check the health of the drive before using it, though. Do
this with a diagnostic utility downloaded from the drive mftr.'s
website. Here's info re Knoppix:

An easy way to retrieve Windows files is to boot with Knoppix, a Linux
distro on a live cd. You will need a computer with two cd drives, one
of which is a cd/dvd-rw OR a usb thumb drive with enough capacity to
hold your data. To get Knoppix, you need a computer with a fast
Internet connection and third-party burning software. Download the
Knoppix .iso from www.knoppix.net and create your bootable cd. Then
boot with it and it will be able to see the Windows files. If you are
using the usb thumb drive, right-click on its icon (on the Desktop) to
get its properties and uncheck the box that says "Read Only". Then
click on it to open it. Note that the default mouse action in the
window manager used by Knoppix (KDE) is a single click to open instead
of the traditional MS Windows' double-click. Otherwise, use the K3b
burning program to burn the files to cd/dvd-r's.

Did you remember to initialize the disk in Disk Management? Open the Help
and Support Center and see this article: To initialize new disks.

The OP does not want to "erase" the drive. They want to keep the 'data' on it.

Sorry - I thought the OP had just installed a new drive and wondered why XP
didn't see it.
