WD HDD not recognized correctly with USB-IDE adaptor

the Western digital hard disk drive is recognized as a western digital,
but it's not recognized as a disk drive. no popup comes up saying disk
drive when it's plugged in.

the usb-ide adaptor is fine. Other hard drives work in the same usb
port with that adaptor. Never had any problems with that adaptor.

Is the drive jumpered as a single drive "without" a slave? Does cable select
change anything? How do the instructions for the USB enclosure tell you to
jumper the drive?

All USB-IDE adaptors that i've used (all 3 of them) (it's not an
enclosure) along with ppl i've spoken to that have used them. They all
work regardless of where the jumper is on the HDD.
(hence mine doesn't have / need isntructions telling me where to put
the jumper)
anyhow
I tried without jumper and jumper in Master position.

as mentioned, other HDDs work.

This looks like a western digital problem. I see no workaround to get
it on USB.

It might be a Western Digital HD fault. But check one thing...
there should be no jumpers in any of the jumper slots, including
the horizontal jumper "parking" position for an unused one. This
is something new with WD hard drives.

no jumpers.

aside from that-
I like my method. I park my jumpers with cellotape far away from any
pins.
Above the panel of power/jumpers/40pin. there's another equal sized
'panel' above it with nothing on it. I tape the parked jumpers there
Next to the parked jumpers I have a strip of paper cellotaped with a
little diagram showing which position is Master and which is Slave. So
I dont have to take the drive out to see jumper instructions ('cos
idiot manufacturers put the instructions in the top face only)

Is the drive formatted, because I found my adaptor very problematic when
being used with a fresh drive, but had no problems with a formatted dtive. I
think the designers assumed that users of the adaptor would be using it on
disks taken out of already-deployed machines!
