Second drive suddenly not recognised by XP Pro

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have 2 hard drives.

The Primary , a Seagate PATA 60Gbte which is partitioned into C,D,E
and F partitions and which has XP Pro-SP2 on the C: partition.

The second hard drive is an 120Gbte SATA drive partitioned into
H,I,J,K and L used for data mainly.

After some difficulty initially getting the m/b , an ASUS K8V SE, to
"see" the SATA drive when I first installed it some 6 months ago , it
has been working without any problems until today when , suddenly ,
with no warning messages , it is not showing anywhere on the PC.

There are no error messages in Device Manager but also no references
to the drive either where previously it was shown , for some reason I
never understood , as a"Maxtor 6V200EO SCSI Drive"

As far as I can remember the last time I noticed its presence was just
before I attempted to access the BIOS page for an unrelated reason ,
got into Safe Mode in error ( by pressing DELETE) and then got into
the BIOS by pressing F8 where i then noticed that there was no
indication of this drive.

After re-booting , it was still unrecognised.

Can anyone suggest a reason for this ?

I made no changes to the BIOS and all I did in Safe Mode was attempt
to delete a corrupt Folder in an external drive ( unsuccessfuly)

The drive came with a CD called "MaxBLAST 4" Installation Software.

I was also trying out a new Application called "Driver Genius
Professional which , when run , backs up all the drivers on your hard
drive where they are available to re-install if necessary ,

I'm not certain whether I ran this software before or after the second
SATA drive "disappeared" or , indeed , whetherthis is a significant
factor or not.

Any suggestions as to a solution would be appreciated.

Thats normal with a drive thats on a controller with its own bios.

Just careless terminology basically.

You sure, that shouldnt get you into safe mode.
and then got into the BIOS by pressing F8

Ditto, that shouldnt get you into the bios either.

Likely it is.

I'd image the system and try a system restore.

Thanks for the reply.

However , I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I found the cause of all
this . !!

I had a look inside the PC and re-inserted the drive cables to the
drive concerned and this brought it back again !

I presume these connections must have become loosened .

He did the equivalent, exposed himself to frog snipers.

Indeed he did - but , at least he was leading from the front . More
than can be said for today's Commanders - hiding as they are behind
their remotely fired weapons !

Those were the days when Leaders were Leaders !

Until the bullet got him, anyway.

Not all of them were quite that silly, strutting around with all his decorations flaunted tho.
