I found spyware and removed it, then followed instructions
from a previous post on this same topic on this forum.

Still can't search from address bar. Any thoughts?

Then you didn't get it all, you're still running the application (e.g.,
Kazaa) that reinstalls the hijacker, or you need to describe your problem in
greater detail, like: What happens when you /try/ to search from the Address
Bar?

Check your system for "hijackware":

Dealing with Hijackware

http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

CoolWebSearch Chronicles
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

[Many anti-spyware sites continue to suffer from a week-long DoS attack.
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page: http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

When I search from the address bar I get the "page cannot
be displayed" message. If I search say for "test", my
computer searches for a webpage http/test.com, which it
won't find.

I scanned my computer with Spybot and Ad-aware. They
found files which I have since deleted.

Well:

I updated the registry as you indicated, but still no
luck. I'm hesitant to make changes to all the items in
HIJACK THIS because I really feel this is getting beyond
my capability. I'm afraid of deleting something I need to
keep.

thanks though. I appreciate your help.

STICO,
The HijackThis log is NOT intended for YOU to remove items,
as previously suggested .... post the log to either of the Support

I may be comming late to the party, but in the control
panel, internet options, advanced tab there is are 4
clickable options regarding searching from the address bar.
One of these options is "Do not search from the address
bar" That may be stopping you.

Hope this is useful
Mike

I ran the repair too and it did nothing to fix the problem. Still get page
cannot be displayed.
