The matches returned by windows 2000 search assistant seem a little quirky
compared to windows xp. This came to light when after installing windows
2000 slipstreamed with sp4 and applying all the fixes in a script. Windows
update reported that the js56nen.exe jscript patch had not been applied, so
I went to check the version of jscript.dll and search assistant couldn't
find it when I typed its name in full.
After a bit of playing around comparing windows xp and windows 2000 I got
the following. Hide protected system files is disabled and show hidden files
is enabled. W2K does have search subfolders set in advanced options although
this is the default. XP has search hidden files and folders set, there is no
equivalent option I can see in w2k.
1. Just the letter J Windows 2000 returns 42 files Windows XP returns
2186. Windows 2000 returns no matches in winnt or winnt\system32 as opposed
to XP. Only XP therefore found jscript.dll
2. J* Both 2K and XP return around 40 files both found jscript.dll in
system32 and in dllcache.
3. The word jscript
W2K returns no matches. XP returns jscript.dll in system32 and
system32\dllcache along with a few other files.
4. jscript*
w2k returns the 2 jscript dlls. xp returns 3, the 2 jscript.dlls and the
jscript help file.
5. jscript.dll
This one has me completely perplexed. When typing in the EXACT FILENAME
w2k returns no matches ? XP returns quite a few(mostly google searches) but
includes the 2 jscript.dlls
6. jscript.dll*
W2K finds the 2 occurrences of the dlls in winnt and winnt\system32 as does
XP.
Is there some bug in the w2k search engine, or is 2K designed to behave
differentlly. At the moment I'm not filled with confidence at finding all
the files I'm looking for.
Best Regards
