searching disables file move/copy

i've notice recently (on two separate pc's) that after i do a search on any
drive, i can no longer copy or move files in file manager. if i highlight a
file and click copy, then if i move the cursor to another location, the paste
is not an option - doesn't show up. if i just try to drag a file somewhere -
it doesn't let me drop it anywhere. weird, huh?

Do you mean with Windows Search 4.0 installed? Try uninstalling it to see if
the functionality returns. You can always reinstall it.

I don't know what windows search 4.0 is....

I am just opening file explorer, hitting ctrl-f and searching for a file
name...

Check your Add/Remove programs for Windows Search 4.0. If you have done
Windows Updates you may have gotten it installed and it is a DOG!!! See if
this is your problem.

nope. no windows search 4.0 anywhere in the list (including updates)
how about adobe acrobat reader ver 10? - that's new...
