I want to figure out how to control which drives the searchindexer can and
cannot index. For example, I don't want it going out and indexing a terabyte
of storage attached to my network shares. I also have several local disks
that I know do not need to be indexed.

Is there a way to do this?

Yes. At the start menu, type "indexing options." Click on the program with
the same name. Click Modify, click "show all locations," pick what folders
you want to include or exclude.

Go into the control panel and click indexing options then click advanced.
