search wont work

When I go to "Start Menu" "Serach" "files or
folders" "find files" to look for something I get a blank
error message looking box entitled "Search Companion with
a yellow alert triangle on the left side and a "OK" button
but no message and no search results...
How do I get my search for files etc. to work?
