How do I specify uniquely a search for foo.jpg so that I will not be given
Afoo.jpg, or zzzfoo.jpg, etc as well?

Are you searching with " Find File" applet from the Start menu?

just quote foo.jpg in the Name box leave the "Containing text" blank.
