Search - most recent two months come back last

We upgraded from Exchange 2000 to 2003 a few months ago.
Whenever I do a search in Outlook (just typing text into the toolbar search
box), results come back immediately for a couple of months and then start
filling in after that - finally, after a long time, results from the most
recent couple of months come back.
Previously, the most recent results always came up very quickly. What do I
need to configure in Outlook (or Exchange?) to make this happen again?

you can try enabling the search index on the server - otherwise, this is
typical Outlook behavior.
