Search function missing / disabled

After a power outage last night, a company PC has lost the Search capability.
When clicking the Start button, then Search, the Explorer window comes up,
but none of the search boxes are available. There is only the blue bar to
the left and the little helper puppy. Also, when using Internet Explorer, it
appears that when they try to use a site that has search capabilities (i.e.
msn.com, yahoo.com, google.com), IE6 refuses to display that site and the
header reads "Invalid Syntax Error". But it is able to go to normal websites
(i.e. DrudgeReport.com, purple.com).

Any ideas on how to repair or replace the Search capability, or is
re-installation going to be neccessary?

Thanks for any and all help!

Go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm and click "S". Scroll
down to "Search - Doesn't Work" and other helpful text at the site.

Since other Search utilities fail too, I'm thinking it could be a
permissions problem (but am not sure). Look here:

Line 15. (r-h column) Disable Search Assistant - _Undo_

Hi Joseph,

See if registering jscript.dll and vbscript.dll resolves that problem.....

Go to Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 jscript.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the Regsvr dialogue box

Go to Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the Regsvr dialogue box

Now, see if the missing Search components have reappeared.

Regards,
