Search Function Disabled in Explorer and Internet Explorer

After a power outage last night, a company PC has lost the Search capability.
When clicking the Start button, then Search, the Explorer window comes up,
but none of the search boxes are available. There is only the blue bar to
the left and the little helper puppy. Also, when using Internet Explorer, it
appears that when they try to use a site that has search capabilities (i.e.
msn.com, yahoo.com, google.com), IE6 refuses to display that site and the
header reads "Invalid Syntax Error". But it is able to go to normal websites
(i.e. DrudgeReport.com, purple.com).

Any ideas on how to repair or replace the Search capability, or is
re-installation going to be neccessary?

Thanks for any and all help!
