Search from XP Start Menu Broken

Works from classic start menu and right click context menu but not XP style
start menu. . .
Left click on Search does nothing, right click displays Search balloon but
does nothing else. . .
Tried some Googled solutions to no avail. . .
Any solution advice available out there?

Show the hidden files and folders Rightclick C:\Windows\Inf\srchasst.inf
Click install. The required file is in ../I386 folder on the XP CD
