When I hit "search for files or folders" from the start
menu, windows 2000 sort of half freezes up for a few
seconds and then nothing happens. Everything else I've
tried, so far, seems to work.

Have you ever installed Microsoft Office 2000 SP1 in your current Windows 2000?

No, but I installed SP4.

I haven't seen any bona-fide issues of Windows 2000 SP4 and losing Search capability. But I have read bona-fide issues of Microsoft Office 2000 SP1 in Windows 2000 losing Search capability.

I also have this problem, i reinstalled win2kpro and got
SP4, since then not a lot has worked properly...

If there is a solution please be kind enough to post

I had this problem in Windows 2000 Professional SP4 also. The fix? Well I don't rightly know. I just know that this issue arises (documented) from installing Microsoft Office SP1 in Windows 2000 regardless of the Service Pack for Windows 2000.

Interestingly, my search function worked just fine for a
while, but quit suddenly. I want to reinstall w2000
fresh, but it's difficult. I have a wonderful "Cornpaq"
presario, and it won't boot from the CD. Any suggestions?

By the way, being new, here, I learned the hard way not to
put my correct e-mail. Since I left a message on this
board, I have received MANY fake microsoft "security
update" flyers from many different addresses and with many
different subject lines. They are overloading my inbox
and I don't know how I can stop this. I'm starting to
hate the internet.

It should boot from the CD-ROM if in the BIOS you have it set to look to the CD-ROM before booting from the harddrive. Mine is set in this fashion:

1) Floopy
2) CD-ROM
3) Harddrive

Of course you need a bootable CD-ROM for this to work. Like the Windows 2000 CD-ROM is.

Yeah, I know about that. My bios, which has recently been
updated, won't give me the option. It just shows the HD
and the floppy. This has baffled two cousins of mine who
are both professionals in this stuff.

Well got me too. I would let the location where you got that BIOS update hear a thing or two. When Compaq had me update my BIOS three years ago and it fried my machine, they gave me a new Motherboard. Since the warranty has long expired and since Compaq isn't Compaq anymore, I have never done a BIOS update since. And don't plan on it. Too risky.
