Search from Address Bar doesn't work

I'm runnung XP SP1 and IE SP1. Search from address bar
does not work; it is enabled in "Options", but when I try,
IE assumes the search term is a web address and I get a
404 error. I have used AdAware, SpyBot and HijackThis to
look for bugs, but found nothing relevant. All settings
have been reset to default. Help!
 
There's another setting to check. Click the search icon in IE's toolbar to open the left search pane. Click Customize, click Autosearch settings. Make sure the "When searching" drop-down menu is not set to not search from the address bar. If no joy, change the setting there or in Tools...Internet Options...Advanced tab, to something else, reboot, change it back to what you want, reboot and see if that "sticks" to the registry - the old kick-in-the-pants method. If no joy, see this site for a .reg file to reset the default search settings in IE 6:
