Search for files or folders freezing from start menu

Hello,
I'm not sure if this is the right topic to post this
question, whenever I try and use search for folders in the
start menu it freezes up temporarily, also the desktop
icons aren't clickable during this time. After a while the
icons can be clicked upon but the search for files or
folders never comes up.
