does anyone use search folders (shortcuts to large data files). i'm finding
the concept useful and have set up folders for all my regular contacts this
way. the problem i'm experiencing is

when setting up a 'new search folder'..

my established preferences are simply to have the search folder find all
related messages for that contact, that is, mail sent 'to' and received
'from' the selected contact. Most of the time this appears to work and when
i go to the folder, if it was successful, there are all messages from and to
that person in date order. what often seems to happen however, is that when
i look at the new search folder the only items listed are those 'from' the
selected contact.

as i say, some of the time this set-up is ok but one or two of the contacts
in my list (i know my replies exist in the data file somewhere) are
stubbornly not picking up my replies to the contact in that search folder.

any help gratefully received, (you know how many hours can be wasted keep
trying and trying to solve these problems alone!!)

Could be a corruption within the pst-file. Have you ran scanpst.exe against
it already?

I also have a search folder that looks for my name + nickname in last
month's messages. Quite handy when you are on a lot of mailing lists and you
simply cannot read each and every e-mail. Usually when someone wants you to
do/check something they will mention your name in the e-mail and the Search
Folder works! ;-)

hi, thanks for replying. No, i've not come across 'scanpst.exe'. I would
like to try what you suggest but, i'm not sure where to look for this tool or
indeed how to 'run' it (on a fairly basic level of knowhow this end - do you
mean 'start' , 'run' then type this in?)

Scanpst.exe is installed when you install Outlook. You can find it here;
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\<locale ID>

thanks for replying with your suggestion. with your link i found the 'inbox'
repair tool and ran it. it said it found errors and i clicked repair (forgot
to look at details of errors which was a shame). not able yet to say if this
has solved or not the original problem (reminder in subject line). as you
suggested this, i'm assuming you had some experience of this solving this
issue? anyway, thanks and will pop a note back in due course when outcome is
clearer to see.

p.s. next to the scanpst.exe file you directed me to is another scan.exe
file "scanost" - just curious... do you know what that one is for (boy, i
just love to scan stuff :)

OK. orignal problem i was having regarding search folders finding the
recipient's mail but not my sent items to them is now solved. I did run the
..pst inbox tool and it did find errors (so thanks for that one) but the
problem continued after the .pst repairs. It seems though that the reason
some' search folders were finding sent mail and not others was that the ones
that were not finding my sent mail were allied to Outlook contacts that I had
altered [naming fields] for at some point in the past (and not realised the
knock on effects this would have in searches!)
