search engines not working

under windows xp home edition with service pack 1
installed ie. 6.1 browser when running search engines like
google, altavisa, msn. get error page, unable to display
page but otherwise web browser can search the web when i
type the page into the service bar

Sounds like "TrojanQhost" ........ however your AV should have detected
this!

Trojan Qhosts hijacks the HOSTS file, however unlike normal redirectors,
this one hides the HOSTS file in the "Windows\Help" folder.
