Latest win xp update added to Task Bar "Search the desktop". How does one
get rid of that?

Have you tried Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel?

No, sorry that's not correct. According to the OP it's on the Task Bar, not
in the Start Menu. You've just directed him to removing the Search item in
the Start menu.

Can anybody advance this - I also would like to get rid of ths!

Add and Remove Programs > uninstall {windows search 4.0}.

Go to windows update and tick don't show this update again,
or it will just keep on reinstalling.
