Search, Copy, Burn to DVD Conundrum

I have a huge hardrive full of digital photos collected
over the last 5 years. I discovered however that for some
reason when I try to burn multidirectory collections to
DVD, all images in any subfolder below the first level are
unreadable. The filenames are there but the extensions
disappear, and they won't open in any application. For
example the image in //Trees/oak1.jpg will open up no
problem. However the exact same image in
directory //Forests/Trees/oak1.jpg will be unusable. The
file name will appear but no associated application icon
will show and no app will open up the image. This does
not happen when I burn multidirectory colections to CD or
when the images are on the hardrive. However when I burn
a DVD data disc it happens everytime.

Also does anyone know if there is a way to copy different
items with the same file name to one folder easily. I
have many directories that have generically named photos.
I will use the Windows Search feature with wildcards to
collect photos from multiple drives and directories into
one big Search result. There are often numerous identical
file names in the Search result, but all the photos are
different. However if I try to copy the results to one
working folder, duplicate files names are simply written
over if I say "Yes to All" or left behind if I say "NO" to
the Windows prompt. I am always looking for a magic
button in Windows that says "Autorename Duplicate Files"
but there has never been one, and I guess will never be.

Does anyone know if there is something out there that can
do this? I simply want the option to "Autorename
Duplicate Files" during the copy or move process, so that
every file in my search result can be written to one
working folder in one step. This sounds simple to me, but
Windows has never managed to do it. With digital imagery
so common now, it is a must feature because even a CD can
hold 7500 jpg images and many cameras just give generic
filenames to photos.
