search companion not working?

Having tried everything I can think of I still cannot get start/search to
work?

win xp home. Packard bell p4 pc

I have gone to the Windows\Inf folder found the msgr3en file in the i386
folder, and then the files are copied
over. but it still doesn't work?

have tried all the tips at kellys corner........... no joy. Have searched
the windows knowledge basis.........to no avail so I thought I might ask a
few professionals and see if they might be kind enough to help.
