search and replace with space

I'm using Word 7.0 on Vista. When I try to do a search and replace ending
with a space, I often find that I get the spinning wheel for a cursor. When I
press escape, it comes back to the arrow cursor, but when I try my search
and replace again, I can't continue-the same thing keeps happening.

Some things I have done: deleted the dataKey, deleted accessory applications
(like Math Type 6.x) and add-ins (like ScanSoft OmniPage 4.0).

If I try a different search and replace (one without a space at the end) it
seems to work well.
