Can I use a type of charcter for search without replacing it?

I have text I imported with

Text ####

I want to do search and replace to change the space between the text and
digits with a tab.

I did a
Search on ^#(space) and replace with #^^t but that doesn't work nor of
course does ^#(space) with ^t

I want it to FIND the ^# but not REPLACE it

Anyway to do this?

Help appreciated.

Type it into the Find box, and click "Find Next."

To replace any space before a string of four digits with a tab, you
use Wildcards and some combination of digits and backslashes to mean
"what was selected" -- there's a standard MVP text on this, which
someone will give you the link to, but it's very difficult to follow
(and not the slightest hint that this ability even exists anywhere in
Word Help!)
