Search and replace merge codes?

Is there a way to search a merge code and replace it with another merge code?

Alt+F9 to view the merge fields, then use Find and Replace.

Perhaps I am missing something. I pressed ALTF9, then copied and pasted the
code I wanted to find into Find, and the replacement code into Replace. WHen
I did a search, Word claimed not to find anything. What am I doing wrong?
 
You can't paste the field code itself. You must search for and replace just
a specific portion (the part after MERGEFIELD, for example).
