I have a P3 1.4 w/512 ram, a adaptec ultra 160 scsi controller and 3 36gb
cheeta scsi hard drives (IDE drive is boot partition).

Started having problems with a hard drive disappearing, I replaced the
controller and all was fine for 3 months, now the same problem is happening
again. please help.

Don't know where to start.

Go to the hard disk manufacturer's web site and download their diagnostic software
respective to your hard disk. After the test, you will know if the hard disk is bad or
not..

Quantum/Maxtor - PowerMax

Western Digital - Data LifeGuard Tools (DLGDiag)

Hitachi/IBM - Drive Fitness Test (DFT)

Seagate - SeaTools

Fujitsu - Diagnostic Tool

Samsung - Disk manager

Was it allways the same drive?
Did you tested the drives with tools provided by manufacturer?
Cooling is OK in the case and drives?

Had a similar problem, system worked again also when replacing controller.
Problem came also back.
Decided to used the dirst controller again, and mysteriously... system
worked again.!!
Found out that there was actually a problems with the cabling. Removing all
drives, cables, jumpers etc...the first time restored the functionality .
There was - in my case- no need for a new controller($#@&). Now I renewed
all cabling en no more problem

Hope this can help you
