Adding SCSI disk problem

Hi,

I'm trying to add a Seagate ST336607LW 37 Gb Hard Disk, SCSI Ultra320
to a on-board Adaptec SCSI Controller AIC-7892 Ultra160/m
on a IBM XSeries 220 Server. The server already have another Seagate
Disk the ST336605LW Ultra160 and a tape drive.

The new hard disk is recognized by the Adapatec Controller and in the
bios menu of the scsi controller, I can scan the disk for problems or
format it as well.

The problem is that when Win2000 server boots, it does not recognised
the drive and in the event viewer there is a messages that says :
A parity error was detected on \Device\SCSI\adpu160m1. The disk is
not available in disk management.
Parity is enable on the controller card and all other SCSI devices.

Anu ideas ??

Thanks

You can't get a parity error if parity isn't enabled. Parity is a check of
the validity of communications -- i.e., a good thing.

If the same controller is already in use for the other devices, the problem
is likely the drive itself, or possibly the cable. I'd find some drive
diagnostics to run on the drive.

One common problem with SCSI is bus (cable) termination, which prevents
signals from bouncing back when they hit the end of the cable. Bad
termination can cause communication errors between SCSI devices.
Double-check that the only termination for any SCSI cable is at the end of
the cable. Some SCSI devices have internal termination, with jumpers to
enable it. The best approach is a separate SCSI bus terminator attached at
the end of the cable.

Another thing you could try would be to use the Adaptec BIOS settings to
reduce the speed of communication with the drive. Try dropping it to, say,
20 mb/sec to see if it fixes the problem. Not that you'd want to run that
way, long term, but it could help prove whether the problem is
communication-related.
