Baffled & frustrated

Windows 2k reboots without warning, mostly but not
exclusively when scrolling vertically. Also sometimes when
copying (to cut & paste).
I thought, because the computer had only recently been
built (w2k only operating system installed), that it may be
hardware but I have replaced memory, increased cooling to
the old amd k6-2 chip, not that it should have needed it,
but the problem persists.
The pandasoft antivirus software has picked nothing up,
Windows and Office are both running the most up to date
Service Packs (unless something new has come out in the
last fortnight) and the computer hasn't even been connected
to the internet yet so I reluctantly believe the anti-virus
software's results.
The event viewer doesn't display properly, when loaded
directly it doesn't display any recorded events in any of
the three sections, when loaded through component services
it displays 'application', but if either of the other two
is then viewed the first won't then display, so using that
is tricky. Additionally, 'system' has 2,600 entries but
nothing displays.

Uhm...
I would try Stinger to double check on Blaster or similar worms:

Realise: fresh installed PC's should never be connected to any
network prior to either install certain Service Packs and
security hotfixes (from CD or USB drive) or install a Firewall
first (also from CD or USB drive), otherwise you'll pick up a
Blaster or similar the first second you are connected to a
network or even worse the Internet.

Wow. That's a new one to me!

I'd suspect your video driver first, although this is just an educated
guess.

Try this: right click on your desktop and select properties. Go to the
Settings tab. Click Advanced. Go to the Troubleshooting tab. It's likely
that the hardware accelleration slider is all the way to the right. Try
bumping it down a notch or two.

If that solves the problem (which I suspect it will), the problem is almost
certainly the video driver and the resolution would be to obtain a fixed
driver from the hardware vendor.

I've seen this happen with Logitech mice. Try updating
the driver or switch to a Microsoft mouse.
